Nikko the ginger cat ❤️ pastels on Pastelmat board. From my clients words “ Nikko chose me as his owner and I loved him more than anything. He was a medium sized cat, he was a pale oranger cat ginger to be more precise. He had blond mixed with orange stripes. His eyes were yellow or green depending the lighting. He loved flowers especially red ones the color red attracted him a lot, so I tried to have red roses in the house for him. His tail was completely striped like a tiger. He was very intelligent, it’s like if he was a child. He understood everything you told him and would respond to you with his little meows. Nikko new how much he was loved my myself and my mother, we was definitely spoiled. He was very playful, his eyes would turn completely black and we new trouble was coming lol. Era muy inteligente, es como si fuera un niño. Entendía todo lo que le decías y te respondía con sus pequeños maullidos. Nikko sabía lo mucho que le queríamos mi madre y yo, estaba definitivamente mimado. Era muy juguetón, sus ojos se volvían completamente negros y sabíamos que se avecinaban problemas. Zeus and Athena, two stunning black Shepherds painted for a very special client in Texas 🇺🇸. 2018. Shepherd dogs have always held a special place in my heart. I grew up with one named Condor. There’s a photo of me as a baby next to him, his head was as big as my whole little body! He was my best friend. I played with him non-stop, and he patiently put up with all my games and creative ideas. He also got lots of treats thanks to me… I still remember the day I gave him an entire packet of biscuits!! 😆😆😆 He truly was the best dog ever ❤️

Every time I work on a double portrait like this, there’s something special in how the two animals relate to each other. Paddy and Brig had such different energies (one a bit more serious, the other softer) and I tried to let that come through in their posture, expression, and even the way the light hits their fur. Painting two dogs together always tells a little story. I love seeing how their personalities play off each other as the piece comes to life. I usually get questions about how I build layers in pastel… so here’s a glimpse into the process. For this one, I started by blocking in soft shapes with vibrant, saturated colours using pastel sticks, and then gradually refined the details with pastel pencils. Since the pencil pigment is usually more muted, I try not to cover everything completely; I like allowing the richness of the soft pastels to show through the pencil texture. That contrast gives the fur a more natural vibrancy, especially in those lighter, golden tones. I build everything in very thin layers, letting the underpainting shine through just enough to keep the colours alive. Painting this type of coat is always quite demanding. It involves balancing warm yellows with cool greys and subtle blues to create a brown that carries a gentle blue undertone. You sometimes see a very similar quality in certain dog breeds, such as Labradors or some Golden Retrievers. I thoroughly enjoyed the process, though it certainly required care and precision. The muscle structure plays a big role in their character, so I paid close attention to how the skin moves across the body—where it rests more tightly against the bone, and where a layer of hair softens the form.
