All these years later and I still get emotional when talking about the adoption of my son, Anthony Mutabazi.. About 8 years ago, I got a phone call regarding a little boy who needed to be watched over the weekend. I was hesitant, it was my early years of fostering and I was learning how to get over my fear of attachment but then I quickly said yes. I find out he was abandoned at the hospital by his previous adoptive parents.. it was heart wrenching to see the pain he was going through. The reality of a Foster Care/Adoptive Family… Today, I got the call from a social worker about an emergency foster placement, and as always, my kids were the first to know. When I sat my kids down to tell them a social worker called about an emergency placement, their first reaction was curiosity. They had so many questions-How old are they? What do they like? When are they coming?—but underneath it all was something deeper: love. They know what it feels like to be the 'new kid' They know the mix of emotions-fear, uncertainty, hope. And that's why their hearts are always open, ready to make someone feel at home, no matter how long they stay. Foster care isn't easy. It's unpredictable, emotional, and sometimes heartbreaking. Earlier this year, my son and I attended my youngest brother's wedding in Uganda. It was a blessing for him to finally meet my family in Africa and a joy for us to do the things I did growing up. It was a joy to show him where I grew up and my culture. Everyone was so happy to finally meet him and of course, he melted their hearts He fitted in so quick, I was shocked!
